The 2017 date in Lina Khan’s Senate confirmation record describes the term she was filling, not the beginning of her service. On June 15, 2021, senators confirmed nomination PN254 for the unexpired portion of a seven-year Federal Trade Commissioner term running from September 26, 2017. Reading that starting date as Khan’s appointment date would turn a description of the office’s term into a misleading personal chronology. [27]
The FTC’s announcement supplies the other end of the interval: September 25, 2024. It also says Khan was sworn in as chair on June 15, 2021. Together, the records distinguish the established term, its remaining portion and the new officeholder’s arrival. They do not describe a fresh seven-year commission term beginning with the confirmation vote. The expiration date belongs to the commission appointment described by the agency. [10][27]
That is why the document labels matter in reconstructing the appointment. Senate vote 233 records confirmation as a commissioner; the FTC attributes the chair designation to President Biden. The June 15 retrospective therefore has separate anchors for the term’s boundaries and the acts bringing Khan into office. Collapsing them into a single “appointed for seven years” statement would lose precisely the limitation carried by the Senate’s word “unexpired.” [10][27]
